PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Four members of the University of Michigan men's track and field team were selected to All-Big Ten teams for their performances at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, the conference announced today (Tuesday, May 15).
Fifth-year senior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck) and junior Jack Greenlee (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) each earned first team All-Big Ten honors after winning individual conference titles last weekend. Forys clocked the fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in the nation this season at 8:28.90 to capture his first Big Ten title. Forys' time also met the U.S. Olympic Trials automatic 'A' standard. Greenlee, meanwhile, also clinched his first Big Ten crown, winning the pole vault after clearing a height of 5.26 meters (17-3).
Sophomore Ali Arastu (Northville, Mich./Northville) and junior/sophomore Ethan Dennis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) were each rewarded for their runner-up performances, landing a spot on the All-Big Ten second team. Arastu clocked the third-fastest 400-meter hurdle time in the nation this season at 49.43. His time also met the U.S. Olympic Trials automatic 'A' standard. Dennis recorded a runner-up finish in the hammer throw with his throw of 62.71 meters (205-9). His school-record setting mark of 62.75 meters (205-10.50), which he set on April 13 at the Spec Towns Invitational, ranks 16th in the East Region and 27th in the nation.
It marks the first All-Big Ten honor for all four athletes.
Senior Nick Neuman (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) was also named Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree. One athlete from each of the 11 Big Ten Conference institutions that sponsor varsity track and field receives the award annually (excludes Northwestern).
The performances by Michigan's All-Big Ten recipients helped the Wolverines move up 39 spots to No. 31 in the USTFCCCA Division I national team rankings, as announced today.
Select members of the squad will compete in the NCAA East Region Preliminary Rounds from Thursday through Saturday, May 24-26, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The regional fields will be announced on Thursday (May 17).
