ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) scored the game-winning goal in the 101st minute to give the University of Michigan women's soccer team a 2-1 double overtime victory over Nebraska on Sunday (Sept. 30) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The Michigan defense set a new school record for most minutes without allowing a goal at 632:08 in the victory.
Michigan was on the defensive early in the match. Nebraska nearly grabbed the opening goal in the 17th minute when Stacy Bartels received a long ball over the Wolverine defense, narrowly missing a low, left-footed shot to the right of the goal. The Wolverines' best chance of the opening frame came in the 38th minute when Lulu Haidar (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) stole the ball off a Nebraska defender's foot and sent a shot from nearly 30 yards out that deflected off the crossbar.
Michigan broke the tie in the 72nd minute on a goal sophomore defender Chloe Sosenko (South Lyon, Mich./Brighton). Junior Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) was left wide open in the middle of the 18-yard box on a corner kick and drilled a shot into the Nebraska defense. The ball deflected directly to Sosenko just outside of the penalty area, where she struck a low, hard shot into the left corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Nebraska answered 41 seconds later, snapping the Wolverines' shutout streak. The Cornhuskers played a long ball into the box, with the initial attempt being stopped by fifth-year senior Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser). Nebraska forward Mayme Conroy found the deflection and headed the rebound home to even up the contest, 1-1. Both defenses were stout for the remainder of regulation, and the match was sent to overtime.
Neither side had any goal scoring opportunities in the first overtime. However, less than a minute into the second overtime period, freshman Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill. /Walter Payton College Prep) flicked a headed ball through two Nebraska defenders, leaving Ezurike to fight off her defender and slotting home the game-winning goal into the lower left corner.
Kopmeyer registered eight saves in net for the Wolverines, her second-highest total for the season.
The Wolverines take the road for a Big Ten showdown at Northwestern on Saturday (Oct. 6) in Evanston, Ill. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. CDT.
