MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team opened the Ambassador Hotels Golden Eagle Classic with a 25-18, 26-24, 25-18 win over Wake Forest Friday afternoon (Sept. 7) at the Al McGuire Center.

Molly Toon
Junior Molly Toon (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) led the U-M attack with 11 kills and a .562 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelly Murphy (Marietta, Ga./Walton) added nine kills and tied junior Ally Sabol (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount) with a team-high 11 digs. Sophomore Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) had 32 assists and freshman Krystalyn Goode (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) had five block assists.
Murphy had eight kills in the match's opening set as the Wolverines hit .531 and had no attack errors. Wake Forest built an early 5-2 lead, but a Murphy kill tied the set at six. Kills from Murphy and Toon helped Michigan to a four-point run, giving the Wolverines a 13-10 advantage. The Demon Deacons clawed back in the set and had it tied at late as 16-all. Michigan then scored eight of the next nine points as Murphy and Toon had three kills apiece in that run. U-M wrapped up the set, 25-18, on a Wake attack error.
Michigan had six blocks in the second set and withstood a late Wake Forest rally for the 26-24 win. U-M had three straight blocks to open the set, taking an early 3-1 lead. Wake came back to tie it at eight, but Michigan scored three of the next four points, capped by a Toon kill, to take a 12-9 advantage. Wake scored the next three points, before Michigan went on a 6-0 run off the serve of Sabol. Toon had a kill and two blocks in that run. Michigan built a 21-15 lead on a kill from junior Jennifer Cross (Scarborough, Ontario/Birchmount Park Collegiate) and had a 23-16 advantage, but Wake climbed back into the set on an 8-0 spurt, forcing set point. A Wake Forest ball handling error tied the set at 24. Toon then registered a kill and Wake had a bad set to give the Wolverines the 2-0 match advantage.
The Maize and Blue came out in the third set and took an early 9-3 lead, capped by a kill from junior Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park). Dannemiller's kill made it 12-6 Michigan and back-to-back attack errors from the Demon Deacons gave the Wolverines a 15-8 advantage. Wake Forest got close at 18-17, but kills by Cross and Murphy and a service ace from freshman Lindsey Lerg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Mercy) started a Wolverine rally. Michigan ended the match on kills from Goode and Toon for the straight set victory.
The Wolverines hit .211 in the match, compared to .064 for Wake Forest. U-M also outdug the Demon Deacons, 50-42. Michigan also had nine total blocks in the match.
