ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman forward Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) scored two goals 51 seconds apart in the second half to propel the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Butler on Friday (Sept. 7) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Wolverines' (5-2-0) lineup was boosted by the return of Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville), Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas), and Christina Murillo (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff), all of whom missed the first two weeks of the season due to participating at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Ezurike made an early impact, starting a play in the 11th minute that led to Michigan's first goal. She slotted a ball through two defenders to a streaking Tori McCombs (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry), who then played a pass into the six-yard box to Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) in front of a wide-open net. Toohey slipped the ball into the net for her second goal of the year, giving U-M an early 1-0 lead.
Michigan nearly added a second tally in the coming minutes following Toohey's goal, but McCombs' header attempt following a Zadorsky corner rattled off the post. Neither team had a significant scoring chance the rest of the way, but Michigan outshot Butler, 8-4, in the opening frame.
The first of Harris' two goals came four minutes into the second half. She played a ball into the six-yard box looking for Ezurike on the far post, but her cross lightly deflected off the hands of Butler goalkeeper Mackenzie Hopkins and into the net to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Harris scored again, this time coming on the receiving end of a quick combo play with Murillo and Toohey, capping the scoring at 3-0.
The Michigan defense was solid in front of fifth-year senior Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) all night, only allowing seven shots. Kopmeyer, who recently became the program's all-time saves leader, made three saves in the contest.
The Wolverines return to the field on Sunday (Sept. 9) for their final non-conference match of the year, when face Oakland in nearby Rochester, Mich. The match will begin at 5 p.m.
