Michigan played its first Big Ten Conference game tonight in front of 5,800 fans at Yost Ice Arena. Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany dropped a ceremonial opening faceoff with Michigan captain Mac Bennett and Ohio State captain Curtis Gedig.
Michigan improves to 73-33-11 in the all-time series against Ohio State. The Wolverines have won the last five meetings between the two sides.
Junior forward Alex Guptill and freshman forward JT Compher extended their team-high point streaks to four games.
Sophomore forward Andrew Copp tallied his team-leading eighth goal and third game-winning goal of the season. Copp also extended his team lead in points (13).
The Wolverines finished the night 1-for-4 on the power play and improved to 8-1-1 when scoring a PPG. U-M entered the night with the third-best power play in the nation.
Michigan finished the night 0-for-2 on the penalty kill and is now 44-for-54 (81.5 percent) for the season on the PK.
Freshman forward Alex Kile recorded a point for the second straight game after registering his first career point last time out.
Nine different Wolverines tallied at least one point. Freshman JT Compher and junior Alex Guptill led the way with two points each.
Michigan has competed in one-goal contests in eight of its last nine games and has a 6-2 record in those contests.
Freshman goalie Zach Nagelvoort improved his record to 6-2-0 on the season. He stopped 32 of 35 shots he faced.
Freshmen Evan Allen (1a), JT Compher (1g, 1a), Nolan De Jong (1a) and Alex Kile (1a) all recorded points tonight. A U-M freshman has tallied a point in each game so far this season.
After tallying a first-period goal tonight, U-M has outscored its opponents 12-3 in the first period this season.
