Michigan used the starting lineup of Cyesha Goree, Nicole Elmblad, Kendra Seto, Danielle Williams and Kendra Seto. It was the first career start for both Williams and Seto.
U-M and Southern were meeting for the first time in program history. It was Michigan's second first-time opponent this season (Arizona).
It is head coach Kim Barnes Arico's 300th career win, making her the sixth active Big Ten coach to reach that mark.
Cyesha Goree had a double-double in the first half, going for 14 points and 13 rebounds. She finished with 16 points and 18 rebounds. The 18 rebounds mark the second-highest total by a Big Ten player this season. It is tied for the ninth most at U-M.
Michigan finished with 22 assists, its seventh game this season with at least 20.
Siera Thompson hit four three-pointers, tying her career best. She leads Michigan with 30 three-pointers on the season.
Madison Ristovski finished with a career-best six rebounds. Her previous high was five at Detroit (Nov. 16).
Nicole Elmblad and Cyesha Goree each finished with double-doubles, the third time this season they have had a double-double in the same game (Xavier, Eastern Michigan). Before this season, teammates had not had double-doubles in the same game since Dec. 7, 2002 (Stephanie Gandy and Tabitha Pool).
U-M shot 52.5 percent (32-for-61) from the floor, the fifth time Michigan shot at least 50 percent this season. U-M is 5-0 in those games.
Michigan never trailed in the contest.
U-M had four players in double figures for the seventh time this season, moving to 6-1 in those games.
