FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- With an opening 75 from by sophomore Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) and a 76 from junior Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team tallied an opening 306 today (Friday, April 26) and sits seventh after the first day of the Big Ten Championships being played the Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort.
Starting off the back nine, the Wolverines were led by Grogan, who posted a three-over 75 and is tied for 13th. After going four over after her first four holes, she shaved off a stroke and maintained that during her final 14 holes as she played the three par 5s at two under and finished with two of her team-best five birdies on the day.
Recording her second-lowest round of the season, Shimel's 76 put her among the early top 25 individually as she is tied for 22nd. Playing the back nine at five-over par, she rallied with three birdies to play the front side at one under and close with a four-over round. Tallying 13 pars and one birdie, sophomore Linda Luo (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) is tied for 29th after an opening 77.
Playing in her first conference tournament, freshman Catherine Peters (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence HS) tied for 34th with a 78, junior Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) is tied for 40th with a 79, and junior Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) is tied for 51st with an 80.
With four players among the top 10, including first-day leader Hana Lee (68, -4), Northwestern took a six-shot lead with a one-under 287. Purdue's opening 293 puts the Boilermakers in the second position, while Penn State is third at 296.
The Wolverines will continue the conference tournament Saturday (April 27), with the second round starting at 9 a.m. off the 10th tee. U-M will be paired with Indiana and Illinois.
