Season Bests Help Wolverines Place Third at Hoosier Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team put together three of its lowest rounds of the season to place third at the 18-team NYX Hoosier Invitational, hosted by Indiana on Saturday and Sunday (April 6-7) at the IU Golf Course.

The Wolverines fired a season-low, one-over-par 285 in the opening round, then had back-to-back scores of 290 for an 865 total on the par-71, 6,813-yard layout. Michigan, which was in third place after each round, finished 15 shots behind winner Indiana (279-282-289/850) and 10 back of runner-up Illinois State (284-287-284/855).

Boosted by a team season-low 66 in the second round, freshman Brett McIntosh (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary School) logged his third top-10 finish of the season, tying for fourth place with a 210 total (72-66-72). McIntosh birdied six of the first eight holes in the second round and had just 10 putts on the front nine. He finished with eight birdies, three bogeys and 26 putts.

Senior Matt Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) also posted a score in the 60s, shooting a career-best 69 in the opening round on his way to a 15th-place finish at 216 (69-73-74). Freshman Chris O'Neill (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run HS) was one spot back in a tie for 16th place with a 217 total that was highlight by an even-par 71 in the first round (71-74-72).

Rounding out the starting lineup, senior Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) tied for 36th at 223 (73-77-73), and sophomore Noori Hyun (Seoul, Korea/Centreville HS [Va.]) tied for 57th with a 229 total (77-79-73). Playing as an individual, freshman Andrew Yeager (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) finished in a tie for 73rd place at 232 (75-78-79).

Next up for the Wolverines is the Detroit Golf Club Invitational on Friday (April 12). Michigan will join Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Xavier for the one-day, 36-hole event that was recently added to the schedule to make up for rounds lost to weather at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate (March 24-26).

N O T E S

• Brett McIntosh's second-round, five-under 66 is the best score by a Wolverine this season. The previous low was three-under 68, by Noori Hyun in the second round of the Fightin' Irish Gridiron Classic (Oct. 8) and Miguel Echavarria in the second round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 15).

• McIntosh, who made 13 birdies in the NYX Hoosier Invitational, was the only player in the field who was under par on the par-3 holes (-1), and he played the par-4s in even par. His 66 in the second round matched the second-lowest round of the event.

• Matt Alessi's career-low, two-under 69 in the opening round bettered his previous best by a shot. He carded a one-under 70 in the third round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 16).

• Michigan's one-over 285 in the first round is its best round of the 2012-13 season. The Wolverines had a two-over 286 in the second round of the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 15).

• Two of Michigan's three lowest rounds of the second have come in their last two events. U-M shot 287 (+7) at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate (March 24).

• Michigan's five individual rounds in the 60s this season have come from five different players: Brett McIntosh (66), Noori Hyun (68), Miguel Echavarria (68), Matt Alessi (69), Chris O'Neill (69).

On the NYX Hoosier Invitational ... "I thought this was a good event for us to compete back in the Midwest and build momentum as we head toward the Big Ten Championships. Really, all of the guys were swinging well and we had to take what the course gave us. That can be hard to accept sometimes, but you can't force a score. Brett (McIntosh) did a great job of eliminating mistakes and taking advantage of his opportunities. We are learning to score and manage our rounds better. It's part of the process in having a young team, but I know they are completely focused and motivated for our remaining events. I'm excited to see how we do."
