SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team fell at No. 2-ranked Notre Dame by a 3-0 count on Tuesday (Sept. 17) at Alumni Field. Sophomore James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) had five shots (four on goal), while senior/junior Adam Grinwis (Ada,Mich./Forest Hills) equaled a season high of five saves in net.

The Wolverines nearly got on the board in the first minute, when junior/sophomore Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) sent a cross in from the right flank that found junior Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I./Providence) inside the six, but the opportunity was struck slightly high.

Notre Dame countered with the first goal of the match a little more than two minutes later in the fourth minute, as Harrison Shipp tucked in a shot on the left side of the goal from 14 yards out.

Michigan, outshooting the Fighting Irish 5-3 at the time, conceded its second goal -- in the 25th minute. Defender Luke Mishu finished off his run by chipping a service from the right touchline inside the six that was headed in by Evan Panken to give the home side a 2-0 advantage.

The two sides were even on shots at 7-7 entering the second half, while the Wolverines held a 4-2 corner-kick advantage.

The second half was a different story, however, as the Irish outshot the Wolverines by a 12-5 margin, not allowing a Wolverine shot for the first 23 minutes of the half. Senior Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) then had an opportunity on a chip shot that was stopped by Irish goalkeeper Patrick Wall.

Arnone had U-M's best chance of the second half, in the 79th minute, beating two defenders from 19 yards out top center before firing a left-footed blast that was parried out of bounds by Wall for a U-M corner.

Notre Dame added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, as Shipp fed a through ball that sprung Leon Brown, who finished lower right to seal the three-goal outcome.

The Wolverines complete their two-match week on Saturday (Sept. 21) as the squad heads to West Virginia to battle the Mountaineers at 7:30 p.m. from Dick Dlesk Field in Morgantown.
