When you first meet Emily White you are immediately drawn to her smile and her laugh. She is that teammate you want to practice and play with. She is that friend you want to hang out with. Why? She just enjoys life. However, there is the competitive side to her as well. The side that gets nervous for practice, a qualifier and the first round of a tournament. However, with her smile she would never let you know it. She has started the first two fall events and has continued to impress with her consistent play and ability to learn on the fly. A relative newcomer to the game, Emily began seriously playing about five years ago in high school. After winning the state title in her first season with Saline High School she was hooked. She may have finished 12th individually, but she improved upon that, making three more finals appearances and finishing third individually as a senior. As she continues to learn things with each day, she has already proven to be a valuable member to the Wolverines, especially with her smile. As final preparations continue for the Wolverines trip to Tennessee, Emily took a few minutes from practice to talk with MGoBlue.com for a spotlight segment.
On the biggest difference playing at the collegiate level ... "It would definitely be the competition within the team. In high school I was consistently playing in the No. 1 spot. Now, there is just an internal competition each week for a spot, which has taken a little bit to get used to. I like that competition. It keeps you fighting to play well and earn your spot."
On what she has thought of her first two collegiate events ..."I have been more nervous than I have before. However, it is still just golf. You just have to play your game. Things will work out the way they are supposed to work out. So far it has."
On coming from nearby Saline to play at Michigan ..."Honestly, I always thought I was going to go away for college, but I like it here. It is nice because my mom still does my laundry. It just has that 'home' feel to it."
On deciding to focus more on golf than softball during high school ... "I just loved golf more. I thought I loved softball, but when I stopped playing it and really started playing golf I just really feel in love with the game. The first year I played golf my high school team won the state championship so that had a little something to do with it as well."
On the college life ... "It's busy. There is a lot of time management that you have to make sure you are on top of. I love it though. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have golf. I would have way too much time on my hands. I study and I play golf. It is kind of a cycle of repeat for me - golf, school, study, eat sleep. I am a very boring person."
On how she describes herself ... "I am an open book. I just like to have fun and enjoy each day. I am a really bad liar too. We already tried to play a joke on coach Mary (Mattson), and I ruined it. I just couldn't keep a straight face."
On what she has enjoyed the most of Michigan Golf ... "I love being part of this team. I really think it is just awesome. I love hanging out with them. I love being with them. I love playing golf with them. It is just so much fun."
