Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the difference between last night's performance and tonight ... "It was night and day. I mean you talk about the mental part of the game and after being embarrassed last night. I think everyone in that locker room knew that they had to play better, they had to prepare better and had to contribute in a team way rather than an individual way. I think everyone got caught up with this first home game business. We were in a lot of bad habits last night, and I thought we just stuck to hard-nosed hockey and hard work. I think anything, we got the break we needed."
On defensive change from last night to tonight ... "It was just the attitude. Just the whole work ethic part, stopping and starting on the pucks, finishing your checks, identifying your man, getting your head on a swivel; all the little things that we have been talking about and doing in practice every week and for some reason we got away from that last night. Tonight, we were a different team."
On Steve Racine's performance ... "Good for Steve. We started the year with (Zach) Nagelvoort being our starter, and it is still early in the year, but Racine has been working hard in practice and got his chance tonight and took advantage of it, so good for him."
On defense generating offense ... "Last night, we had 22 blocked shots, and half of them were from our defense. We weren't getting pucks through, and I thought tonight we did a better job of getting pucks through. It's a tribute to our forwards, too. If they get the puck back to the defense and then they clear out the front of the net or create a screen and create traffic and tips -- like last night, we got a tip-in goal. Tonight, I thought our forwards did a better job and our defense did a better job getting pucks through. We don't know if they are going to find the net or not, but goals are hard to come by for our team right now. We played three games and scored six goals. We have to get goals wherever we can right now."
U-M Freshman Defenseman Cutler Martin
On making his Michigan debut ... "I felt honored to be out there playing for the University of Michigan; the coaches gave me a chance, and I tried to make the best of it"
On scoring his first goal at Michigan ... "I went blank, to be honest. I was just so excited that the puck went in the net. I went, 'Wow, it actually went in.' I got the monkey off my back and got my first goal, so I'm just extremely excited. The guys were already coming at me, and I was still wondering if the puck made it in the net. Overall, I was very excited."
U-M Junior Forward Andrew Copp
On the difference between last night's performance and tonight's performance ... "I guess, we played with a little bit of jam, and a little bit of attitude, with more swagger I guess. Last night, we kind of let them take it to us, and I think we came out with the attitude that we were going to take it to them for the full 60 (minutes) tonight, and I think you saw that. We put away a few more chances, and that game could've had a few more. Steve (Racine) made a lot of good saves that kept us in the game. All around it was a better effort; we gelled and came together overnight and today. It is not going to be easy, it's going to take all 27 guys, and I think we showed that tonight."
On what the team has to do to get the offense going ... "Take our chances -- we had 32 shots tonight, so we had a lot of grade-A chances that we needed to bury, and me, I had a lot of chances that I need to bury. But it's not just one guy or anybody, we all got to start putting the puck in the net and start burying our chances."
U-M Junior Goaltender Steve Racine
On when he found out he was going to get the start in net ... "I found out this morning at the rink and coaches told me, 'Be ready to go in.' I prepared like I was going to play, and I got off the ice in the morning and they said, 'You're going tonight.'"
On what he thought of the defensive performance ... "I thought they played great. I probably could count more than five grade-A chances, and they really helped me out, which is nice on my first game back in there."
