EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Madisson Lewis scored with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the match and send it to overtime at Northwestern, and the University of Michigan women's soccer team emerged with its second straight draw, 1-1, on Friday (Oct. 24) at Lakeside Field.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first 84 minutes, until Northwestern netted the first goal of the match at 84:39. The Wildcats played a short corner and served the ball into the center of the box, where U-M junior Christina Ordonez attempted to clear the ball away with her head. The ball was directed straight to Northwestern's Addie Steiner, who one-timed a shot into the upper left 90 to give NU a 1-0 lead.
Michigan responded less than five minutes later with the tying goal. With one minute remaining in regulation, freshman Taylor Timko raced to the corner flag and served a ball into the center of the box. The ball took a bounce to sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian, who flicked a rainbow kick over her head back toward the net, and Lewis was there to tip the ball by NU goalkeeper Lauren Clem and into the back of the net.
U-M outshot Northwestern, 5-3, in extra time, but neither team managed the go-ahead goal during the two 10-minute overtime periods.
The Wildcats held a 21-18 advantage in shots, including 8-5 in the first half, while Michigan led, 9-6, in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz made a career-high eight saves, including four stops in the first half and two in each of the overtime periods.
The Wolverines will remain on the road for a matchup at Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 26) at Illinois Soccer & Track Stadium. That game will begin at 1 p.m. CDT, and a live audio stream will be available. [ Listen ]
