ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Ainsley McCallister scored two goals and assisted on another to headline the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team's 3-2 decision over New Hampshire in its regular-season home finale Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26) in front of 353 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. All three Wolverine goals were scored by seniors on Senior Day.

The Wolverines started somewhat slowly, giving up several early shots, but settled into a groove to control most of the first half.

Senior Emy Guttman broke through midway through the frame, at 17:48, to give U-M the initial advantage with a tip goal near the right post. Fifth-year senior Leslie Smith set up the play from the right sideline, feeding the ball to the corner for McCallister, who hammered it into the circle, where Guttman knelt to get her stick on it and redirect it into the nearside corner. It was her third goal of the season and second in three games.

The Wildcats responded less than 10 minutes later, at 26:21, taking advantage of a scrum in front of the Michigan cage following a penalty corner opportunity. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Swenson stopped the direct shot, but the Wolverines could not clear the ball as Meg Flatley swept it into the nearside left corner.

Michigan maintained its momentum, however, and McCallister scored both of her goals in the final four minutes of the half as U-M surged to a 3-1 halftime advantage. Her first goal came out of a flurry on the right side of the cage as junior Jaime Dean pushed the ball in deep from the top of the circle. Junior Shannon Scavelli corralled it before McCallister picked it up and slid it to the opposite lower corner.

McCallister took advantage of another flurry less than two minutes later, at 33:00, to net her second goal. Smith fired in a pass from the right sideline, and McCallister picked it up near the UNH defensive 25, driving it into the circle. It was batted around before bouncing back to McCallister near the left post, and she sniped a backhand out of the air, lifting it high to the opposite top corner for her first career multi-goal game.

New Hampshire scored the only goal of the second half to cut U-M's advantage, turning around a waved-off Wolverine goal on the penalty corner to net one of its own just moments later at the 40:09 mark. Kellie Joyce took advantage of a broken corner play to regain control of the ball at the top right side of the circle and launch it high to the opposite side.

Michigan outshot the Wildcats, 19-8, and outcornered them, 8-7. Swenson earned four saves in the Wolverine cage, while UHN goalkeeper Carlie Tarbell stopped seven of U-M's 10 shots on goals.

The Wolverines will wrap up their regular-season slate next Sunday (Nov. 2), traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to take on rival Ohio State at noon at Buckeye Varsity Field.

• With today's victory, Michigan improved to 6-2 in the all-time series against New Hampshire. U-M has won the last three straight meetings.

• Fifth-year senior Ainsley McCallister upped her season totals to three goals and a Big Ten-leading 17 assists. She owns a career-best 23 points this season, bettering her previous mark of 21 from last season.

• Fifth-year senior Leslie Smith saw her scoring streak halted at six straight games. Smith has scored in 10 of 17 games this season.

• The Wolverines have matched or outshot their opponent in every game since the season opener. U-M has held its opponents to single-digit shots in each of the last eight games.

• Michigan has not allowed more than two goals in each of its last 16 games.

On the win ... "It was a big game to bounce back. We didn't play great on Friday (vs. Michigan State). UNH has a great team, and it's Senior Day. So, there were a number of potential distractions. But I thought the seniors played great today. They're a great, talented group. They played as a team, and I thought Ainsley (McCallister) and Leslie (Smith), in particular, carried our team today. I was very proud of them."

On overcoming a slow start ... "I think that Michigan State game was a hard one for them. So, we really needed to get back out and get back into our game plan and type of play. That was a big focus, and I thought we eventually did a good job with that today."

On Senior Day ... "I had tons of good friends and family friends come out. My housemates made signs. So it was really special to have them all here cheering me on for my last regular-season home game. To perform well was icing on the cake."

On winning on Senior Day ... "It means a lot. We had a rough start to the weekend, so we needed to come out strong, believe in each other and get a good outcome. There can always be some distractions on Senior Day, but we just had to put that away. I think we were able to go that."

On what U-M will focus on this week ... "We need to keep working on keeping our passes simple, working with each other and finishing our opportunities."
