ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Ahinga Selemani gave the University of Michigan men's soccer team the lead in the sixth minute of action, but three second-half goals from the No. 8 Indiana Hoosiers resulted in a 3-1 defeat Sunday (Oct. 26) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match was a true tale of two halves, as U-M outshot IU 9-3 in the first half before IU outshot U-M 13-2 in the second.
Michigan (4-7-3, 2-2-2 Big Ten) got off to a fast start with five shots in the first 15 minutes of action. The breakthrough came early, as Selemani took a low service from the left wing across the face of goal from senior/junior Colin McAtee that the freshman put home lower right to give U-M the early 1-0 advantage.
The Wolverine defense was stingy in the opening half and did not allow a shot on goal from the Hoosiers until the 24th minute. It was the first quality opportunity until the 30th minute when an Andrew Oliver shot sailed high.
U-M closed the half with two more great chances, the first coming in the 35th minute, as senior Marcos Ugarte slipped a ball to McAtee in the finishing third, but the ensuing effort with the right foot went narrowly wide right. The two linked up again five minutes later, as McAtee put forth a headed effort that sprung Ugarte, but IU's Colin Webb burst off his line to stop the glorious opportunity.
The Hoosiers (10-2-3, 3-2-1 Big Ten) came out in the second half with a goal only 30 seconds after the break, as a long throw-in from Jamie Vollmer went inside the six and was headed home by Grant Lillard to level the match a 1-1.
Just over eight minutes later, IU added another score that was heavily influenced by a Vollmer throw, as Oliver collected a loose ball at the top of the six. His initial shot was parried by senior Adam Grinwis, but the rebound was put home lower right to give the Hoosiers the 2-1 advantage.
IU went on to add an insurance goal in the 72nd minute on a goal from Tanner Thompson. The final chance of the match for U-M came in the 80th minute, as senior right back Nick Lewin made a run down the right flank and found himself free inside the area, but his shot went off the right post.
Grinwis made a season-high six saves and was instrumental in keeping the match within relative reach in the second half.
The Wolverines will wrap up a three-match homestand Wednesday night (Oct. 29), hosting the Oakland Grizzlies at 7:30 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium.
