ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Freshman Taylor Timko of the University of Michigan women's soccer team was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced today (Monday, Oct. 27). Timko helped the Wolverines to a 1-0-1 weekend, with a tie at Northwestern (1-1, 2OT) and a defeat of Illinois (2-1).
In U-M's 1-1 double-overtime tie at Northwestern, Timko registered seven shots. At Illinois, she scored one goal on her only shot attempt and added the assist on the game-winning goal. She also helped U-M's defense hold Illinois to just one goal and six shots on goal out of 23 total shots attempts.
Timko has started all 18 games for the Maize and Blue at left back and now has four goals and two assists in her first season ever playing defense.
Timko is the fourth Wolverine to earn a Big Ten weekly award this season, joining sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Offensive Player of the Week, Oct. 6), sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, Sept. 15) and freshman Megan Hinz (Defender of the Week, Sept. 15).
Timko and the Wolverines will hit the road for their regular-season finale at Purdue on Saturday (Nov. 1) at 7 p.m. Michigan is currently 12-4-2 overall and 8-2-2 in Big Ten play, good for third place in the conference.
