Michigan played its first game in Houghton in the Red Berenson era, as it had not played at Michigan Tech since Nov. 12, 1983. Michigan Tech head coach Mel Pearson spent 23 seasons as an assistant/associate head coach at Michigan, starting at U-M in 1988, before the start of Red Berenson's fifth season behind the bench.
Michigan and Michigan Tech met for the 218th time since the series began in 1927. The Wolverines fell to 122-92-4, with a 29-52-2 record in Houghton. Michigan is now 22-4-0 against Michigan Tech in the Red Berenson era. The Wolverines have dropped five straight games at Michigan Tech, with their last win in Houghton coming on Oct. 24, 1981 (W, 3-0).
Michigan fell to 1-3 against ranked competition this season.
Freshman forward Dylan Larkin has points in three straight games after scoring a goal in the third period tonight. Larkin has seven points (2G, 5A) on the season.
Senior forward Zach Hyman is nearly halfway to his career-best point total from a season ago (7-10-17) after recording an assist tonight. Hyman leads the team with eight points (3G, 5A) on the season.
Sophomore defenseman Nolan De Jong picked up his first point of the season with an assist on Larkin's third-period goal.
Sophomore forward Alex Kile had his five-game point streak snapped in tonight's contest but is still second on the team with seven points (3G, 4A).
The Wolverines finished 0-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the penalty kill. Michigan has now been perfect on the penalty kill in four straight games and is 14-for-14 on the PK over the last four-plus games. Michigan had its best night on the penalty kill since going 6-for-6 against Michigan Tech last season in a 2-1 win on Nov. 2, 2013. The Wolverines had their worst night on the power play since going 0-for-6 against Ohio State in a 2-2 shootout loss on Feb. 28, 2014.
