MADISON, Wis. -- A golden goal from sophomore Rylee Woods (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview) with one minute left in the first overtime period gave the University of Michigan men's soccer team a 2-1 win over the Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday (Oct. 4) at Wisconsin's McClimon Complex.

U-M trailed 1-0 with eight minutes left in regulation, before junior forward James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) evened the scoreline at the 82:07 mark to send the match to overtime.
The Wolverines held strong defensively in the opening 25 minutes of action, as the Wolverines were outshot, 5-1, in the first 30 minutes of action. Co-captain senior goalie Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) made a big save on Wisconsin's Tom Barlow in the 12th minute that swung momentum in U-M's favor the rest of the half.
In the final 15 minutes of the opening stanza, Murphy had a pair of great chances with the first coming in the 30th off a feed from junior/senior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines). The latter came in the 37th off a link-up play on a righty shot from an odd angle on the left side of the six that was smothered by Wisconsin goalkeeper Adrian Remeniuk.
Coming out of the gate in the second half, Wisconsin had a golden opportunity in the 50th. The Badgers hit the cross bar twice in rapid succession before the sequence was ended with an offsides call.
Following a superb cross right to left from senior Nick Lewin (Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) inside the area that found the head of Woods that was stopped by Remeniuk in the 54th minute, U-M began to impose its will on the Badgers.
The persistence paid off for the Wolverines, as Murphy found the equalizer in the 82nd minute, picking up a feed in middle of the park and ended a 20-yard run with a class finish from 25 yards out. The Englishmen fired a lefty strike that rang off the right post and into the back of the net for his second score of the season.
Five minutes into the extra session, Murphy connected with freshman Ahinga Selemani (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) at the top of the area. The freshman took a touch and fired a lefty shot near post that was punched out for a corner in U-M's top opportunity of the opening extra-session.
Four minutes later, it was Woods who ended in on a set-piece off a suffered U-M foul. The lefty shot went through traffic from 40 yards out and skipped past Remeniuk to give U-M the winner.
The Wolverines return to U-M Soccer Stadium to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, currently ranked No. 3 nationally, Tuesday (Oct. 7) at 7:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live via BTN Plus.
