Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On general game thoughts ... "When you give up two goals in the first minute, you're playing catch-up the whole night. I thought our team stayed with it and we had a chance. But goals are hard to come by when you've given up four goals against. Defensively we have to be better."
On what he told the team after falling behind 2-0 in the opening minutes ... "I was just telling them we've got to get one of those back. They got two and now we've got to get one back. They were all over us. But I like the way our team hung in there. We played a better second half of the game than the first half."
On Tyler Motte's play ... "He wants to play well in this situation. He's one of our best players and he did play well. He got an important goal for us and that got us going. He's a good player and he showed up and had a good game tonight."
U-M Junior Forward Andrew Copp
On what he thought of the team's effort tonight ... "We showed some resiliency. We kept battling, kept pushing, especially late in the second period before they scored that fourth goal. That carried over into the third, and we had so many opportunities. In the last minute we had three or four, and we've got to put it in. We're not happy with a lot of things, especially our start and our execution defensively. But for the first game of the year we showed some resiliency. We didn't overcome the adversity tonight, but we showed up and battled through it, which is good to see."
On the team's slow start ... "On their first goal, they snuck a guy behind us for a breakaway, and that got the crowd going. We come out the next shift a little shell-shocked and then a fluke play in our own zone. The puck kept bouncing and found their stick. They put a shot in the back of the net and I don't think (Nagelvoort)even saw it. That's the way it is. The margins between winning and losing are so small and you saw it. The first two minutes ended up costing us the game."
U-M Sophomore forward Tyler Motte
On his goal ... "We're four-on-four to start the second period. JT (Compher) pulled me aside and said I'm going to try and push it through off the faceoff. I tried to play a chip around one defenseman, put my shoulder down and get to the net. The puck just stuck to his pad at first. My brother came off the post and the puck was still there on the goal line. The net came up but the peg never came off. I'm assuming that's what they looked at for so long. But we came up one short."
On the play of his brother (Ferris State goaltender) C.J. Motte ... "He played well. The goals we had, I don't think he had much of a chance. While the spotlight may have been on me for a couple minutes, he won the battle. He has bragging rights for life so far. It was good to get back out there with the guys and I'm sure he's happy with the way he played. But we both have to go back to work for next week."
