ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team earned its third victory over a ranked team and eighth home win of the season as the Maize and Blue defeated No. 17 Ohio State in four sets Saturday afternoon (Nov. 15) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 21-25 and 25-23.
Freshmen Caroline Knop and Adeja Lambert had 14 kills apiece to lead U-M's offense. Knop made it a double-double for the fourth straight match with 12 digs. Sophomore Abby Cole had 10 kills and four blocks, while senior Lexi Dannemiller had 39 assists and five blocks.
The Wolverines hit .400 to take the first set 25-22. Knop had five kills on seven swings, including a termination to give the Wolverines a 12-7 lead. Freshman Claire Kieffer-Wright's kill put Michigan up 17-12. Ohio State cut the lead to one (19-18) on an Andrea Kacsits, kill but Knop and Cole combined for a block to make it 22-18 Michigan. Cole forced a set point with a kill at 24-20, and Lambert ended the set on a kill.
Michigan used a furious late charge to change a close second set into a 25-14 rout. The Maize and Blue trailed 10-8 in set two before outscoring the Buckeyes 17-6. This included seven straight points off Morlaes' serve, capped by a kill from junior Krystalyn Goode. Michigan ended the set with five straight points off Knop's serve, as two straight Lambert kills and a Buckeye set error gave Michigan the 2-0 lead going into the locker room. The Wolverines held the Buckeyes to a -.059 hitting percentage in set two.
Ohio State came back to win set three, hitting .333 and pulling away late to keep the match alive. There were 17 ties and four lead changes in the set with the last tie coming at 20-all. A Luisa Schirmer kill and Michigan attack error gave OSU the 22-20 lead. Lambert's kill cut that lead to one, but the Buckeyes scored the final three points to move to set four.
Knop had four kills, and the Wolverines used three service aces to win the fourth set and the match. Kieffer-Wright's kill at 14-7 forced the Buckeyes to call timeout. Dannemiller came back with an ace on the next points, and it was 18-10 after a Knop kill. Lambert's kill put Michigan up 22-16. Michigan had match points at 24-17, but the Buckeyes scored the next six points. Knop ended it with a kill for the two-point win (25-23).
The Maize and Blue hit .234 for the match and had 10 team blocks. The Wolverines collected four service aces while Ohio State had 12 service errors.
Michigan stays in Ann Arbor for a Wednesday night (Nov. 19) match against Penn State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
