COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Despite controlling the run of play the vast majority of the match, the University of Michigan men's soccer team saw its 2014 campaign come to an end, falling to the second-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes by a 1-0 count in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals Sunday (Nov. 9) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Wolverines controlled possession early on, with the first Wolverine chance coming in the 14th minute from early substitute Nate Kohl off a service from Tyler Anderson. The header from Kohl was taken nicely but parried by Buckeye goalkeeper Alex Ivanov out of bounds for a corner.
The Wolverines continued to push forward but conceded a score against the run of play in the 19th minute. Max Moller made a run down the far side and sent in a cross inside the area. The ensuing ball was headed home by Danny Jensen lower right for the first tally of the match.
U-M seemed to find the equalizer in the 36th minute, as Kohl linked up with William Mellors-Blair. A little flick from Mellors-Blair inside the box was headed home by Kohl but was taken off the board due to an offside call. The Wolverines closed the half with two more chances, the first coming off a shot from Mellors-Blair, and the latter coming on a sliding shot from Colin McAtee in the 38th.
The Wolverines outshot the Buckeyes, 5-3, in the opening stanza and held a 4-0 corner-kick advantage.
Coming out of the intermission, U-M had a chance right away in the 47th minute of play on a link-up play inside the area. McAtee took a feed inside the finishing third, but the shot went narrowly wide left.
Ohio State found success in the second on counter attacks and nearly made the game 2-0 in the 60th, as Jensen sent a ball into Yianni Sarris at the top of the six. After a touch, the strike was hit high from eight yards out as the match held at 1-0.
In the 72nd minute, goalkeeper Evan Louro came on for senior Adam Grinwis, who had one save in his final match as a Wolverine. Louro's presence allowed U-M to push a high offensive line, which nearly paid off in the final minutes of action, beginning in the 84th, as senior Tyler Arnone had a chance on frame that was blocked. Classmate Marcos Ugarte followed minutes later with a lefty bender from the right side that curled narrowly wide left in U-M's final chance of the match.
Michigan bids farewell to Arnone, one of the most decorated players in U-M history, as well as Grinwis, a four-year starter in goal. Nick Lewin as well as Ben Manko and Ugarte also played their last matches for the Wolverines in the defeat.
