ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2014 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Wednesday (Dec. 10), which includes 71 University of Michigan student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Two-time cross country team captain Mason Ferlic, an aerospace engineering major, is one of seven men's distance runners on the Academic All-Big Ten squad. Ferlic also earned All-America honors with a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Championship and was All-Big Ten with his fourth-place conference finish. This is the second Academic All-Big Ten honor for the redshirt junior.
One of 11 U-M field hockey players on the academic team, fifth-year senior Ainsley McCallister was named to her third Academic All-Big Ten team, also earning the honor in 2011 and '13. A movement science major, McCallister was announced as a Longstreth/NFHCA second-team All-American earlier this month and was All-West Region and All-Big Ten first team in 2014.
Among the 12 football players named Academic All-Big Ten is senior All-Big Ten honorable mention defensive end Brennen Beyer. Also a three-time honoree, the Canton, Michigan, native is a finalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, recognizing the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. A psychology major, Beyer recorded single-season career-high totals in tackles, tackles-for-loss and sacks this year.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
