
Wolverines Lose on the Road to No. 5 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior Cyesha Goree recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but the University of Michigan women's basketball team fell, 70-50, at No. 5-ranked Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13) at Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center.
Goree led the way for Michigan, tying Notre Dame's Lindsay Allen for game-high honors. Senior Shannon Smith scored nine points, sophomore Siera Thompson went for eight points, and junior Madison Ristovski totaled seven points and five assists. Michigan struggled from the field, shooting 34.5 percent (19-for-55) compared to Notre Dame's 51.7 percent (31-for-60).
U-M closed within nine of the Irish out of the halftime break on a Goree layup, 37-28, with 17:06 remaining. The Irish responded by scoring seven straight points for a 44-28 lead to force a Michigan timeout with 15:03 remaining in the contest. The Irish kept the lead in double figures the rest of the way, taking the 20-point win.
Following a U-M timeout with 9:05 remaining in the first, Michigan scored six straight points on a Ristovski triple and a freshman Katelynn Flaherty three-point play to cut the Irish lead to seven, 22-15, with 8:04 left in the half. Goree scored on a layup to get within five, 24-19, with 5:34 left.
The Wolverines once again got within five points, 26-21, after the teams traded baskets at the 4:49 mark, but Notre Dame scored nine of the last 12 points in the half.
Goree tipped in a layup at the buzzer that was called good on the court but overturned upon review, giving the Irish a 35-24 halftime lead. Thompson led the way with eight points, with Goree going for six points and six rebounds and Ristovksi chipping in five points. Michigan shot 30.0 percent (9-for-30) from the floor in the half, compared to 51.7 percent (15-for-29) for Notre Dame.
