LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of Michigan volleyball sophomore middle blocker Abby Cole was named today (Wednesday, Dec. 17) to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-America team. Cole was selected as an All-North Region honoree last week.
Cole, who was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten team, played in all 30 matches for the Maize and Blue, averaging 3.67 kills a set and leading the Wolverines with 103 total blocks. Cole is fourth in the Big Ten in points per set (4.26/s) and fifth in hitting percentage (.359). The 2013 Big Ten All-Freshman selection had career highs of 24 kills in both matches against Indiana this season. She also tied a career high with nine blocks in the first meeting vs. the Hoosiers (Sept. 27). The Grand Haven, Michigan, native had 23 double-digit kill performances in 2014 and led the Maize and Blue in kills 16 times.
The two-time Big Ten Player of the Week (Oct. 13, Oct. 20) honoree was named to the All-Tournament teams at the Arkansas Invitational and the Michigan Invitational. She had 21 kills in three sets in a win over Rutgers (Oct. 17) and 20 kills apiece in matches against Illinois (Nov. 1) and Wisconsin (Nov. 7).
Michigan now has 15 AVCA All-America performers in school history (counting honorable mention). This is Cole's first All-America honorable mention nod.
