With Michigan's 2-1 win over No. 5 Michigan Tech, the Wolverines improved to 54-34-1 all-time in the GLI and 29-16 in GLI semifinal games. The Wolverines have won 15 GLI titles since the tournament's inception in 1965, the most by any team, and will play in the GLI championship game for the first time since 2011.
U-M met Michigan Tech for the 34th time (most common GLI opponent) in the Great Lakes Invitational and improved to 23-11-0 all-time against the Huskies in the GLI. Michigan is now 14-5-0 against Michigan Tech in GLI semifinal contests. The last time the two teams met in the GLI was on Dec. 29, 2012, a 4-0 Michigan Tech win in a semifinal contest.
Michigan earned its second win over a ranked opponent this season (2-5 on the season) and its first win over a top-five opponent this season with the 2-1 win over No. 5 Michigan Tech. The last time Michigan beat a team ranked in the top five was on March 15, 2014, a 6-2 win over No. 1 Minnesota.
With the victory, Michigan earned its 100th win all-time at Joe Louis Arena, improving to 100-47-5 at the facility, including a 44-22-1 record in GLI games.
Michigan goaltender Steve Racine made his first start in net since Nov. 1 at Michigan Tech and picked up his first win in net since Oct. 24 (W, 8-4). He made a season-high 40 saves, two shy of his career high (42 saves, 10/12/13 vs. RIT).
With a goal and an assist, senior Zach Hyman has a new career high for points in a season, leading the team with 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists). Hyman now leads the team with six multiple-point games this season.
With Cutler Martin's first-period goal, Michigan defensemen have now recorded a combined 10 goals in 16 games this season. In 2013-14, Michigan defensemen scored eight goals in 35 games.
The Wolverines allowed 40 or more shots in a game for just the second time this season, and they improved to 2-0 on the season when allowing more than 40 shots.
Michigan was outshot 41-21 on the night, ending a nine-game streak that the Wolverines outshot or matched the opposition in shots.
The Wolverines scored a power-play goal for the fourth straight game and are now 8-for-17 (47.1%) over the last four contests on the man advantage.
Michigan was perfect on the penalty kill (2-for-2) for the fourth straight game and is now 15-for-15 on the PK in that span.
