Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On what the difference was tonight compared to the series at Michigan Tech ... "Our team got a renewed respect for Michigan Tech. We realized that we had to be better, and we played more desperate, as Mel (Pearson) may have mentioned, and we got lucky. They fanned on a couple of good shots that missed the open net on the power play in the second period. But I like the way our team dug in and blocked shots and found a way to salvage the win."
On how he thinks the makeshift lineup played tonight ... "Well, I thought they were pretty good. You saw we put Boo Nieves back at center, and Boo has played right wing over the last two months. I thought he had a really strong game, so good for him. (Justin) Selman, we had him play center, and he hasn't played a lot this year because of his injury. Dexter Dancs played and Evan Allen played, who hasn't played much. (Mike) Chiasson played and Andrew Sinelli was in. We had guys in that haven't played night after night, and they played their role and got through the game. Hopefully, we'll be better tomorrow."
On if he spoke with Tech coach Mel Pearson after the game ... "I told Mel that they had the better team tonight and they had the better game. It was just one of those games. It was like and old-time Michigan team who was outshooting and outchancing the other team, but that other team was saving the game. Tonight, we were the other team. Mel's doing a great job there."
U-M Senior Forward Zach Hyman
On his third-period goal ... "Andrew (Copp) made a really good pass to me at the blue line and I saw that their defenseman went down, so I tried to get around him and hit the top corner."
On if this win is a measure of revenge after getting swept at Michigan Tech ... "Definitely. We talked with our team about teams we owe, and Michigan Tech was up on our list. We got swept in their building and we wanted to take it to them in this game. It was a hard-fought game, and I'm happy we came out with a win."
U-M Junior Goaltender Steve Racine
On if the holiday break before the GLI helped the team refocus ... "The break was a good chance for us to regroup. The first half of the season didn't go exactly how we wanted it to go. So we went home, had some nice time with our families. We knew coming back that we had to step it up and that guys that hadn't had opportunities before would be called on and had to make the most of it."
On what he liked about his game tonight ... "I was seeing the puck pretty well today. It's always nice as a goalie when you feel like you don't have to move around all that much. The guys did a really good job letting me see shots and clearing out second opportunities."
On where this game ranks for him ... "We've played some good games at Joe Louis Arena throughout my career here. A win tomorrow night would be up there."
