GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Senior Richard Funk took home a gold medal in the 100-yard breaststroke (52.36) to pace the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on the third day of the AT&T Winter National Championships on Friday (Dec. 5) inside the Greensboro Aquatic Complex. The Wolverines currently sit second place (186 points) and are now up to 28 total NCAA 'B' cuts through three days of competition after gathering 16 on Friday alone.
Funk was seeded fourth heading into the event final but took nearly a second off of his time from the morning (53.12) to place atop the podium. He won out of lane six, defeating Portuguese Olympian and record-holder Carlos Almeida by less than two tenths-of-a-second. Funk came very close to reaching the NCAA 'A' standard (52.29).
The night began with the 400-yard individual medley, where junior Dylan Bosch took home a bronze medal (3:44.92). The race was dominated by Michigan, as Bosch's former teammates and current training partners, Kyle Whitaker and Connor Jaeger, finished 1-2 ahead of him. Bosch chopped close to three seconds off his time for the morning and was not the only one to do that; freshman Ian Rainey was faster in the finals with a 12th-place finish (3:51.02), and fellow freshman Ryan Sebastian cut more than four seconds off his preliminaries time to finish 17th (3:50.09). Junior/sophomore Keltan Lawler also received a second swim, finishing 23rd (3:56.87).
Junior Peter Brumm was the team's fastest and only event finalist in the 100-yard butterfly, where he was eighth (47.27). Freshman Evan White was in the consolation final and took nearly a second off his time from the morning, finishing five spots ahead of his seed to take 10th (47.36). Senior/junior Jeremy Raisky was 13th (47.76), and sophomore Vinny Tafuto was 15th (47.99), both with nearly identical times from preliminaries.
Senior Justin Glanda represented Michigan in the event final of the 200-yard freestyle, finishing eighth (1:36.41). Sophomore Jack Mangan was the other Wolverine to get a follow-up swim, taking 21st (1:37.62). Both men were actually faster in the morning -- Glanda at 1:35.77; Mangan at 1:37.39.
Joining Funk in the final of the 100-yard breaststroke was fellow senior Bruno Ortiz, who took fourth (52.71), just missing the podium. He had an option to get a second swim in the 100-yard butterfly earlier in the evening but chose to skip it and rest for this race instead. Sophomore Chris Klein also had an impressive day in the breaststroke, finishing 13th (53.78).
In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Jason Chen had the highest finish at 15th (48.10), but freshman Tristan Sanders had the team's fastest time. Sanders won the 'C' final (47.60), finishing 17th overall.
The Wolverines closed the final day of competition with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:19.38). On the relay was freshman Paul Powers, Tafuto, Brumm and Glanda. Powers went 19.71 on the takeoff, which is a new season-best time. He went just a shade faster on Friday than he did in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle yesterday (19.82)
The AT&T Winter National Championships conclude tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 6). Preliminaries will begin at 9 a.m. with event finals starting at 5 p.m.
