ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics squad began its 2014-15 season with its annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad meet, with Blue defeating Maize, 337.800-329.40, on Saturday (Dec. 6) at Cliff Keen Arena. Senior Stacey Ervin stole the show on the night, scoring a massive 16.35 on floor exercise for the highest score of the night.

Overall, the Blue team claimed the victory with wins on floor (57.95), pommel horse (52.75), vault (58.95) and parallel bars (57.70), while the Maize team claimed a victory on still rings (55.70) and high bar (55.25). With this win, the Blue team has now won five of the last eight in the annual intrasquad, including winning the competition last year.

Ervin scored a 16.35 on his first floor routine of the season, while junior Nolan Novak led the way for Maize team with a 13.50 on pommel horse. After one rotation, Blue team led Maize, 57.95-50.60.

Maize began to close the gap in the second rotation behind a second-place performance from sophomore Anthony Stefanelli on floor. Senior Adrian de los Angeles won first place in the pommel horse for Blue team with a score of 14.15, helping Blue team hold on to a 110.70-106.85 lead after two rotations.

After three rotations, Maize cut the deficit down to a little more than two points, trailing 166.25-164.10. Maize captain Michael Strathern recorded a 15.15 to clinch first place in the event. For Blue team, senior Hub Humphrey notched a 14.20 on still rings.

The fourth rotation featured outstanding performances by Maize on the still rings, led by freshman Marty Strech, who won the event with a 14.60. His teammate, senior Colin Mahar, finished second with a 14.55. For the Blue team, sophomore Tristian Perez-Rivera notched second place with a 14.85 on the vault to extend Blue's lead, 225.20-219.80.

Freshman Dmitri Belanovski scored a 14.45 on the high bar to lead Maize to victory in the event. On the Blue team, senior Nick Hunter recorded a score of 15.45 on the parallel bars. After five rotations, the Blue team led 282.90 to 274.15.

The final rotation finished up with Perez-Rivera clinching second place in the high bar with a 14.40, while Strech continued his impressive debut with a 14.45 on the parallel bars.

Ervin won the all-around for Blue team with a score of 85.55, while Maize's Belanovski finished second with an 81.90.

The Wolverines begin regular-season competition at the annual Windy City Invitational, to be hosted by UIC on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Chicago. Meet time is slated for 7 p.m. CST.
