Sunday, Feb. 23 • Gold Medal Game
Carl Hagelin became the seventh U-M ice hockey alumnus to win an Olympic medal, earning silver as Sweden fell to Canada, 3-0, in the gold medal game. It was Sweden's first loss of the 2014 Olympics. Playing without several key contributors, Sweden was shut out by an outstanding Canadian defensive corps and goaltender Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens), who made 24 saves. Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Chris Kunitz (Pittsburgh Penguins) scored for Canada, which never trailed in the Olympics. Saturday, Feb. 22 • Bronze Medal Game
Max Pacioretty and Team USA fell to Finland, 5-0, in the bronze medal game of the Olympic ice hockey tournament. In a scoreless first period, Patrick Kane (Chicago Blackhawks) could not convert on two penalty shot chances. Finland scored two goals in a span of 11 seconds in the second period to take control of the game. Veteran Teemu Selanne (Anaheim Ducks), playing in his sixth Olympics, scored at 1:27, and Jussi Jokinen (Pittsburgh Penguins) added another goal at 1:37 to put Finland up 2-0. Juuso Hietanen, Selanne and Olli Maata (Pittsburgh Penguins) added third-period goals, and Tuukka Rask (Boston Bruins) made 27 saves in net to earn the shutout. Pacioretty had a shot on goal in 10:01 of ice time.

Friday, Feb. 21 • Semifinals
Carl Hagelin has a chance to become the first Michigan hockey alumnus to earn a gold medal at the Olympics after Sweden beat rival Finland, 2-1, in the first semifinal of the afternoon. Finland scored the game's first goal at 6:17 of the second period, as Olli Jokinen (Winnipeg Jets) beat Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) from a bad angle to give the Finns the lead. However, Sweden answered with two goals later in the period by Louis Eriksson (Boston Bruins) at 11:39 and Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators) at 16:26 to take the lead. That was enough for Lundqvist, who shut the door with eight saves in the third period and 25 saves overall. Hagelin saw 10:25 of ice time and had two shots on goal in the game.
In a thrilling semifinal against Canada, Max Pacioretty and Team USA fell, 1-0, in a game that featured great goaltending from Canada's Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens) and USA's Johnathan Quick (Los Angeles Kings). Jamie Benn (Dallas Stars) broke the scoreless stalemate at 1:41 of the second period, deflecting a shot by Jay Bouwmeester (St. Louis Blues) past Quick to give Canada all the scoring it would need. Price made 31 saves, including nine in the third period, to earn the shutout, while Quick stopped 36 of 37 shots on net. Pacioretty saw 10:27 of ice time and had two shots on goal. Team USA will play Finland for the bronze medal, while Canada advances to the gold medal game against Sweden.
Wednesday, Feb. 19 • Quarterfinals
Carl Hagelin scored two of Sweden's four third-period goals in a 5-0 win over Slovenia, moving the Swedes into Friday's semifinals to face rival Finland, a 3-1 winner over host Russia. Up 1-0 after two periods, Sweden broke open the game in the third, as Daniel Sedin (Vancouver Canucks) and Loui Erikkson (Boston Bruins) scored in the opening 10 minutes of the frame, before Hagelin sealed the win with two late goals. Hagelin's first goal came at 11:27, as he curled off the half boards, took a pass in the slot from Jimmie Ericsson, and beat goaltender Robert Kristan. At 16:10, Hagelin's second goal came on a redirect of a pass from Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators). Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) made 19 saves in net to earn his second shutout of the Olympics. Sweden enters the medal round with a chance to add to its collection of gold medals in men's ice hockey at the Olympics (1994, 2006). Hagelin's goals were the first in the Olympics by a Wolverine since Mike Knuble scored in the quarterfinals for Team USA in a 4-3 loss to Finland on Feb. 22, 2006 in Torino, Italy. Hagelin is just the third Michigan hockey alum to score twice in one game at the Olympics, joining John Matchefts (USA) and Bob White (Canada), who both scored two goals in games during the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy.
Max Pacioretty returned to the Team USA lineup in a 5-2 win against the Czech Republic, playing left wing on the fourth line with Paul Stastny (Colorado Avalanche) and T.J. Oshie (St. Louis Blues). Pacioretty saw 11:14 of ice time and had one shot on net. With the win, Team USA advanced to Friday's semifinal round to face Canada, which slipped past Latvia by a surprisingly close 2-1 margin, in a rematch of the 2010 Winter Olympics gold medal game in Vancouver. After goals by each team in the opening five minutes of the contest, Team USA scored four unanswered, including two late in the first period to take the lead for good. Dustin Brown (Los Angeles Kings) scored at 14:38 and David Backes (St. Louis Blues) added a goal with two seconds left in the first period to give Team USA a 3-1 lead. Zach Parise (Minnesota Wild) added a goal midway through the second period, and Phil Kessel scored his fifth goal of the tournament at 2:01 of the third period to put Team USA ahead, 5-1. James van Riemsdyk (Toronto Maple Leafs) scored at 1:39 of the first period for Team USA, while Ales Hemsky (Edmonton Oilers) had both Czech Republic goals. Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles Kings) made 21 saves in net.
Tuesday, Feb. 18 • Playoff Qualification
Brian Lebler's first Olympic Games came to an end, as Austria fell to Slovenia, 4-0, in the qualification round. Lebler was on the ice for 14:04 and had a team-high four shots on goal, but goaltender Robert Kristan made 30 saves to earn the shutout and help Slovenia advance to play Sweden in the quarterfinals. Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings), Jan Urbas, Sabahudin Kovacevic and Jan Mursak scored for Slovenia, which took a two-goal lead in the first period and relied on Kristan to make big stops the rest of the way. Lebler finished the Olympics with two assists in four games played and averaged 15:17 of ice time.
Sunday, Feb. 16
Brian Lebler saw 13:07 of ice time as Austria earned its first win of the 2014 Olympics, defeating Norway, 3-1. Austria scored twice in a span of 2:25 early in the first period to take control of the game, getting goals from Michael Grabner (New York Islanders) and Michael Raffl (Philadelphia Flyers). Grabner added a second goal with 1:37 remaining to seal the win, and Mathias Lange made 34 saves in net for Austria.
Max Pacioretty was a healthy scratch in Team USA's 5-1 win over Slovenia in the final preliminary round contest in Group A. Phil Kessel (Toronto Maple Leafs) recorded a hat trick, and Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres) made 17 saves in his first start of the 2014 Olympics. By going 3-0 and winning its group, Team USA earned a bye into the quarterfinal round.
Saturday, Feb. 15
Max Pacioretty and Team USA earned a 3-2 shootout win over Russia in a thrilling Group A Preliminary Round contest. Pacioretty had a shot on goal, two penalty minutes and a -1 rating in 8:31 of ice time. Power-play goals by Cam Fowler (Anaheim Ducks) and Joe Pavelski (San Jose Sharks) helped the U.S. take a 2-1 lead in the third period. Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit Red Wings) scored on the man advantage to tie the game with 7:16 to play. After a scoreless overtime period, T.J. Oshie (St. Louis Blues) was the hero for Team USA, scoring four times on six shootout attempts. Jonathan Quick (Los Angeles Kings) made 29 saves in net.
Carl Hagelin was injured in the first period of Sweden's 5-3 win over Latvia. With the win, Sweden finished Group C Preliminary Round play with a 3-0 record, earning a berth into the quarterfinals of the medal round. Hagelin saw 3:26 of ice time, departing the game long before Daniel Alfredsson (Detroit Red Wings) broke a 2-2 tie at 16:14 of the second period with the decisive goal in the contest.
Friday, Feb. 14
Carl Hagelin and Team Sweden earned a 1-0 win over Switzerland to improve to 2-0 in Preliminary Round Group C competition. Hagelin had four shots on goal in 9:40 of ice time. Daniel Alfredsson (Detroit Red Wings) broke a scoreless tie at 12:39 of the third period, putting in a rebound off a shot by Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators) to help Sweden earn the victory.
Brian Lebler and Team Austria fell, 6-0, to Canada in Preliminary Round Group B action. Lebler had the second-most ice time of all Austrian forwards, logging 18:52 on Austria's second line with Michael Grabner (New York Islanders) and Michael Raffl (Philadelphia Flyers). Canada scored twice in the first period and four times in the second as Jeff Carter (Los Angeles Kings) had a hat trick, Patrick Marleau (San Jose Sharks) added three assists, and Roberto Luongo (Vancouver Canucks) made 23 saves to lead the Canadians.
Thursday, Feb. 13
Brian Lebler had a strong Olympic debut despite Austria's 8-4 loss to Finland in a Group B Preliminary Round game. Playing on a line with Michael Grabner (New York Islanders) and Michael Raffl (Philadelphia Flyers), Lebler had two assists, two shots on goal and a +1 rating in 15:05 of ice time. Austria led 1-0 and 2-1 before Finland tallied five unanswered goals, including two in 0:08 late in the first period.
Max Pacioretty and Team USA routed Slovakia, 7-1, in a Group A Preliminary Round contest, scoring six goals in the second period to break open the game. Pacioretty teamed with Paul Stastny (Colorado Avalanche) and T.J. Oshie (St. Louis Blues) on a formidable fourth line that accounted for two of the team's seven goals. Pacioretty had an assist, four shots on goal and a +2 rating in 11:30 of ice time.
Wednesday, Feb. 12
Carl Hagelin had two shots on goal in 12:25 of ice time as Sweden earned a 4-2 win over the Czech Republic in Group C Preliminary Round play. Erik Karlsson (Ottawa Senators) scored two goals, Oliver Ekman-Larsson (Phoenix Coyotes) had two assists, and Henrik Lundqvist (New York Rangers) made 27 saves to help Sweden earn the victory in the opening game of men's ice hockey at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
