In his postseason debut, freshman goaltender Zach Nagelvoort set a new school single-game record with 63 saves.
Michigan was outshot, 65-53, for the night. The Wolverines had their largest shot total of the season and the most since recording 56 shots in a 6-3 win over Bentley on Oct. 19, 2012. Derek DeBlois led Michigan with seven shots on goal.
At 92:47, Michigan played its longest game since falling to Maine, 4-3, in triple overtime on March 30, 1995, in an NCAA semifinal contest in Providence, R.I.
Phil Di Giuseppe scored Michigan's lone goal at 11:06 of the third period. Di Giuseppe has recorded eight goals in his last nine games and has 10 points overall in that span (7G, 3A).
Boo Nieves had the primary assist on Di Giuseppe's goal, and he now has 11 points (2G, 9A) in his last nine games. Nieves is second on the team with 19 assists.
Michigan has led or been tied after one period of play in 30 of 35 games this season, including 10 games in a row. The Wolverines have outscored opponents, 36-19, in the first period this season.
Michigan has played 16 one-goal games this season and has a 9-7 record in those contests. U-M was 4-6-0 in one-goal games in 2012-13.
The Wolverines returned to the Xcel Energy Center for the first time since the 2011 Frozen Four, when Michigan advanced to the national championship game against Minnesota-Duluth (L, 2-3 OT). Michigan fell to 2-4 all-time at the venue.
Michigan's streak of reaching 25 straight conference semifinals, a streak that began in 1990, was snapped with tonight's loss to Penn State.
