PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team concluded a two-game road swing with a 19-10 setback at Brown on Wednesday (April 9) at Stevenson Field.
Freshman Jess Angerman (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded her third career hat trick, leading U-M with three goals; while freshman Tess Korten (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) had a team-high four points (2G, 2A). Kim Coughlan (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) also contributed two goals, marking her third two-goal performance in the last four games.
Michigan held the Bears scoreless through the first four and a half minutes of the game before a free position goal from Brown's Richael Walsh ignited a 4-0 run over a span of 1:29.
Korten halted Brown's run at the 20:51 mark as she drove around the crease from behind right, beat her defender and slipped the ball past BU goalie Kellie Roddy with a quick shot fake and high shot.
Three minutes later, Brown tallied back-to-back goals in 30 seconds to push its lead to five, 6-1, with 17:22 remaining in the first half.
The Wolverines responded with a 4-0 run of their own over the next four minutes to slash the Bears' lead to one, 6-5, by the 11:27 mark. Coughlan jump started the run as she drove hard right, dipped under two Brown defenders with one hand just before the crease, regrouped and fired a high shot into the net.
A free-position goal from Angerman, followed by a solo goal from freshman Anna Schueler (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and another free-position goal from freshman Emily Braun (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central) capped the run.
Before the half, the Bears registered three unanswered goals, including a score with just 15.2 seconds left on the clock to take a 9-5 lead into the break.
In the second stanza, Michigan clipped Brown's lead down to three goals on three different occasions as the two teams traded goals for the first 15 minutes.
Angerman, Coughlan and Korten each netted their second goals of the day in the first half of the second period, with each goal separated by a Brown tally, and the Bears led 11-8 at the 17:07 mark.
Brown answered with three straight goals before Angerman solidified her third career hat trick on a feed from Korten with 8:59 on the clock. After two more goals from the Bears, Korten dished out her second assist of the day to freshman Madeline Dion (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), who was cutting left to right through the eight meter.
The Bears netted the final three goals of the contest to produce the final score of 19-10.
The Wolverines will now return home to host California on Saturday (April 12) at 1 p.m. for the program's first-ever Pink Game at Michigan Stadium.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Jennifer Ulehla
On getting down early and coming back ... "At the timeout, it was a matter of us not having shown up yet. We had to get out there and attack. Then that was what they were able to do. I think that does show a tremendous amount of heart. It also shows that we have what it takes, it's just a matter of getting out there and consistently giving it our all for 60 minutes."
On what is preventing the team from reaching that next level ... "It is a little bit of everything. Fitness wise, being young, their bodies are still adapting to our weight training and we do need to reach a different level. We also don't have a lot of depth in the midfield, so they end up having to do a little bit more running than we would like. Fitness is a part of it, as is execution. Being able to get out there and do exactly what it is we are asking them to do, from when we actually draw the play up to them actually going out there, is sometimes difficult for them. That can be attributed to youth. At this point in time, we recognize we are able to compete at a real high level, but have to do so for 60 minutes straight. That was a great team that we just played and we showed some great glimpses of being able to really compete with them."
On getting more scoring opportunities ... "One of our goals for this game was to take away opportunities for Brown and to give ourselves as many opportunities. We had to get more shots off and that's exactly what we did today. I think we need to work on the quality of our shots. Obviously some were going high, some were going wide, and too many of them were going right to the goalie. We did make the adjustment when we needed to, as far as being a little bit more deceptive and placing the ball where we asked them to place it. We were going hard to goal. Brown was playing a high-pressure defense, but we were able to spread them out and really go at the goal. That is in our favor. I was really proud of how we handled that pressure, especially in the first half. We were able to get all of those shots off. It's just too bad we didn't land more of them, but we are definitely going in the right direction."
