PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- University of Michigan ice hockey incoming freshman Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) became the 18th player in program history selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, going 15th overall to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday (June 27) at Wells Fargo Center, home of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Larkin was ranked 17th among North American skaters by the NHL's Central Scouting Service after a standout season with the United States National Team Development Program in 2013-14. A 6-foot, 192-pound forward, Larkin appeared in 60 games for the USNTDP Under-18 team and finished fourth on the team in scoring with 56 points (31 goals, 25 assists) in 60 games.
In April, he helped the United States earn gold at the 2014 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Finland, recording four points (two goals, two assists) in six games. Larkin had 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists) in 55 games with the Under-17 team in 2012-13 and played in the Belle Tire Midget Minor (Mich.) program before joining the USNTDP.
Larkin is the first Michigan player or commit to be taken in the first round of the NHL Draft since Winnipeg selected Jacob Trouba with the ninth overall pick in 2012. Larkin is the 10th highest pick in U-M history and the sixth U-M player or commit to be selected by the Red Wings.
The 2014 NHL Entry Draft will continue on Saturday (June 28) with rounds 2-7, beginning at 10 a.m. All six remaining rounds will air live on the NHL Network.
