55 Wolverines Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced its 2014 Distinguished Scholar award recipients today (Wednesday, July 9), with 55 University of Michigan student-athletes receiving the prestigious honor. Big Ten Distinguished Scholars must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution with a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.
U-M's 2014 honorees include 32 female and 24 male representatives across 20 varsity sports. The list also includes two of Michigan's 2013-14 Academic All-Americans: women's basketball junior Nicole Elmblad (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle), who earned her second such honor; and second team All-American pole vaulter Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western), who was named a Distinguished Scholar for the third time.
Ten members of Michigan's 2014 Big Ten champion men's swimming and diving team were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, while two members of U-M's 2014 NCAA champion men's gymnastics team earned the honor, including graduate student Syque Caesar (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park Academy), who earned the award for the third time. Five student-athletes on the men's lacrosse team were also cited.
On the women's side, both rowing and track and field placed seven student-athletes on the Distinguished Scholars list. Senior rower Bryna Oleshansky (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) capped off her collegiate career as a Pocock first-team All-American and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
