ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team earned its first win of the 2014 season Sunday (Aug. 31), defeating the SMU Mustangs, 3-0, at U-M Soccer Stadium behind a pair of goals from senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) as well as a goal and an assist from senior Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I./Providence).

Freshman Evan Louro (South River, N.J./St. John Vianney) made his first-career start in net, going the distance while making a trio of stops in goal.

U-M got on the board early in the sixth minute, as freshman Ahinga Selemani (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) did well holding off a trio of SMU defenders at the top of the box, holding possession, he dished a feed to Ugarte inside the area. The senior took a touch and then buried a shot top left to give the Wolverines the early 1-0 advantage.

The Wolverines doubled their pleasure in the 21st minute, as junior forward James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) fed Ugarte on the left flank. Ugarte then earned his first helper of the season with a service inside the six that was headed home by McAtee to give U-M a 2-0 advantage.

SMU had its first real chance in the 38th, but Louro stonewalled a chance from Colten Habecker inside the finishing third that resulted in a corner. Five minutes later, Louro was up to the task once again, stopping Habecker on a breakaway attempt.

The Maize and Blue iced the match in the 76th minute, as McAtee linked up with Arnone at the top of the 18. McAtee then cut in from the left top side and ripped a left-footed cracker from 17-yards out near side to run the tally to the final resting place of 3-0.

U-M hits the road for the first time this season next Saturday (Sept. 6) at 3 p.m. against the Columbia Lions in New York City. The match will serve as a homecoming for U-M assistant coach Tommy McMenemy, a former All-American for the Lions in 2003.
