ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team surrendered a goal with 22 seconds remaining in regulation and settled for a 1-1 draw Friday (Sept. 12) against No. 12 Maryland in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Junior forward James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) netted his first goal of the season for U-M in the 75th minute of action at U-M Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Wolverines outshoot the Terrapins 3-2, play opened up in the second stanza, as the Terps had 10 shots on goal to seven for the Wolverines.
U-M burst out of the gates to begin the second half with a chance in the 46th minute off the foot of junior William Mellors-Blair (Nottingham, England/Georgia St.), who had three shots on the night. Minutes later, U-M had a flurry in front of the Maryland goal, and a shot from Murphy was cleared off the Terp goal line by a defender inside the six.
Senior/junior Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) followed up the shot from Murphy that was saved by keeper Zack Steffen, while sophomore Rylee Woods (Jamestown, Ohio/Greeneview) took the final shot of the sequence that narrowly sailed high.
After equal opportunities for both sides in the next 30 minutes, Michigan found its breakthrough in the 75th minute, as Woods sent in a lefty service off a set-piece that found the head of Murphy eight yards out. The Englishmen finished the opportunity top right to give the Wolverines the 1-0 advantage with minutes to play.
Maryland then ramped up the pressure in the final minutes of regulation, tallying the equalizer at the 89:38 mark. Midfielder Alex Crognale took a loose ball inside the 18 and found David Kabelik, who beat U-M goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest HIlls) to even the contest at 1-1 and send the match into overtime.
U-M had one final chance in the 105th minute, as a Woods free kick from the right flank was cleared away by the Maryland defense. The final chance of the night for either side came in with two minutes left by the Terps on a shot from Mael Corboz that went wide left.
U-M finishes off its two-match homestand on Tuesday (Sept. 16), hosting the Bowling Green Falcons at 7:30 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium in non-conference action.
