Wolverines Unable to Build Off First-Set Win, Lose to KSU in Four

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team won the first set, but Kansas State had 23.5 blocks and held the Wolverines to a zero or less hitting percentage in the final three frames for the four-set win in match four of the Michigan Invitational Friday night (Sept. 19) inside Cliff Keen Arena. Set scores were 19-25, 25-17, 25-13 and 25-10.

Junior Ally Davis (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) led U-M's offense with 10 kills, while junior Tiffany Morales (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) garnered 19 digs. Sophomore/freshman Cindy Zhou (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) had 10 digs, while junior Carly Warner (Naperville, Ill./St. Francis) had 19 digs on the night.
The Wolverines used a .364 hitting percentage and a trio of service aces to win the first set. Michigan was up 10-9 after junior Krystalyn Goode's (River Hills, Wis./Nicolet) kill and 12-9 off a Morales service ace. Kansas State called timeout after Davis' kill at 15-11. Sophomore Abby Cole (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) put the Maize and Blue up 17-13 after a termination. The Wildcats cut the lead to 19-18, but Michigan ended the set on a 6-1 run as Cole had a pair of kills in the last four points.
The Wolverines fell in the next three sets as the Maize and Blue had only 19 kills, and Kansas State tallied 21.5 blocks. KSU had a 6-0 run that highlighted its third-set victory and an 11-0 run in the fourth and final set.
The Wolverines close out the Michigan Invitational this Saturday night (Sept. 20) against Eastern Michigan. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
NOTES
• Kansas State now holds a 4-1 all-time series lead on Michigan.
• Kansas State is now the only unbeaten team in the Michigan Invitational. The Wildcats defeated Eastern Michigan in five sets earlier in the day.
• Junior Ally Davis picked up her fourth double-digit kill performance of the season and ninth in her career in tonight's match.
• Sophomore/freshman Cindy Zhou had 10 digs on the night, her first career double-digit dig match.
• Junior Tiffany Morales led Michigan in digs for the 60th time in her career. Morales had 19 digs on the night.
