Sept. 4, 2014

As we kick off another year of Michigan Athletics, we wanted to know -- what do University of Michigan student-athletes value most? Together with the Office of Student-Athlete Alumni Engagement, MGoBlue.com surveyed current and former student-athletes and asked them for their direct input. Starting on Monday (Sept. 1), MGoBlue.com will release the 10 most important values, with one being highlighted each weekday through Friday, Sept. 12. Thursday, Sept. 4 -- Winning
Because nobody likes to lose. There's a reason each team sings "Hail to the Victors" after every win. Winning is fun. Whether it's winning a championship or defeating a rival, our student-athletes relish the feeling of victory.

Every program here has a rich history. I think
winning is important to all of us. That's what we continue to strive for each and every day that you come to practice.

            The
endless pursuit of victory, where the sole focus of outworking, playing, training or preparing to be the champion is at the core my Michigan experience.

The catalyst behind tradition is often championships.
To sustain tradition, championships must be won.

Our team was very competitive and we won several team Big Ten championships. I'd like to think that being a part of such a successful program lets you know that no matter what you're doing in life, there is always a way to win. And it might not always mean first place.
Winning is an attitude.

Michigan is a community filled with winners. Each student and staff member goes to this school for a reason -- to lead, grow and win in their chosen field of expertise. Not all definitions of "winning" are the same for everyone, but those at Michigan can agree that everyone here is a winner.

The presence of victory and championships is all around us, from the gold and silver (old school) hardware sitting in the trophy cases, to the faces of former champions on banners and statues who watch us as we train. Each one serves as a constant reminder of the Big Ten and national championships we strive to achieve each year.

Winning is for yourself, the team, the fans and, most of all, the University. Representing the University of Michigan is one of the greatest feelings, knowing that you are competing for something much more than yourself.

Winning is important to me because it can take on many different meanings.
We work hard to win in the classroom by getting A's. We work hard in our sport to win championships. We work hard to win in the professional world by earning internships and jobs. It is important to recognize the small victories that can act as stepping stones toward the bigger ones.
