ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team claimed a pair of Big Ten Conference weekly accolades after earning wins over two ranked opponents last weekend, the league office announced on Tuesday (Oct. 13). Senior forward Shannon Scavelli was named Offensive Player of the Week, while senior back Lauren Thomas was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Scavelli scored the game-winning goal in the Wolverines' contests against No. 20 Iowa and No. 9 Stanford, opening scoring early in a 4-0 win against the Hawkeyes and tallying the lone goal in U-M's 1-0 decision against the Cardinal. Scavelli leads the Wolverines with a career-best eight goals this season. She has tallied at least one point in each of the last three games.
Thomas anchored the Wolverine defense in back-to-back shutout wins; Michigan allowed just 15 total shots and eight shots on goals through 140 minutes of play. She also posted two goals against Iowa -- her second career multi-goal game. Thomas has already matched a career best with five goals this season. Defensively, U-M has posted six shutouts this season and four of its last five games.
It is the first weekly accolade for Scavelli this season and the second for Thomas. Michigan has claimed four of the last five defensive nods. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson has also earned a pair of weekly honors this year.
Michigan returns to action on Friday (Oct. 16), traveling to Evanston, Illinois, to face Northwestern at 3 p.m. CDT at Lakeside Field.
