ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Fifth-year senior Colin McAtee netted a brace, and freshman Francis Atuahene scored his sixth goal in seven games to guide the University of Michigan men's soccer team past Duquesne, 3-0, on Tuesday (Oct. 13) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Sophomore goalkeeper Evan Louro was forced to make only one save all night, earning his fourth shutout of the season.
The Wolverines held the advantage all night, starting in the 27th minute on McAtee's first goal. Duquesne goalkeeper Evan Kozlowski came way off his line to play a high lofting ball at the top of the box, but McAtee beat him to it. The two collided and jostled for the ball, but it fell to McAtee, who calmly slotted it into the open net to give Michigan the early advantage.
Atuahene padded the lead with a masterful strike a little more than 10 minutes later. Junior/senior Michael Kapitula found some space in midfield and passed it to junior/senior Tyler Anderson, who sat right above the Duquesne back line. Anderson took one touch and played a perfect ball behind the defense to a charging Atuahene. With only the keeper to beat, Atuahene fired his shot in the top corner of the goal, increasing Michigan's advantage to 2-0.
McAtee scored his second goal to cap the scoring right after the second-half kickoff. Kapitula and freshman Robbie Mertz got the first two touches of the half, but it was McAtee who created the chance, slicing through Duquesne defense and scoring into the far corner just 10 seconds after play got started.
U-M outshot the Dukes, 8-2, in the second half of play. The backline of juniors Rylee Woods, Lars Eckenrode, Andre Morris and sophomore Billy Stevens allowed only two shots in the second half, with Louro stopping the lone shot on goal.
