Season Highs from Goode, Skjodt Propel U-M to Win over Rutgers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a strong offensive performance, the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team defeated the visiting Rutgers Scarlet Knights by a 3-1 score (25-18, 25-12, 21-25, 25-23), Wednesday evening (Oct. 14) from Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines came out strong the first and second sets, scoring early and often to gain a firm lead. After a 25-18 first-set victory, the Maize and Blue responded in the second set with even more offense, forcing a 25-12 set win and a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
After the break, Rutgers took a hard-fought 25-21 third-set win. Michigan's defense faltered, but a strong offensive performance from Abby Cole, Carly Skjodt and Krystalyn Goode propelled the Wolverines to a 25-23 fourth-set victory and a 3-1 match win.
Cole led the Michigan offense with 15 kills on a .303 attack average, but it was Goode and Skjodt who recorded career-high numbers in the effort. Goode led all players in attacking with an impressive .833 attacking percentage, registering a season-high 10 kills. In addition, Skjodt picked up her first career double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs, while also recording a career-high .520 attack average.
As a team, the Wolverines recorded a season-high .381 attack average, which they haven't done since the 2014 season when the Maize and Blue blasted 48 kills on 17 errors to earn a .443 attack percentage in a 3-0 victory over Maryland (Oct. 18).
Despite dropping the third set by a 25-21 score, Michigan actually recorded the highest attack average of the match in set three, with a .407 attack percentage. In addition, set three featured a match-high three blocks.
Defensively, Michigan tallied 51 digs on the night and eight team blocks. Individually, Skjodt led the team at the net with four block assists and a solo block. From the back row, libero Lindsey Lerg led the team with 16 digs, while freshman Jenna Lerg and Skjodt each picked up 11 apiece.
Michigan will wrap up midweek play tomorrow (Thursday, Oct. 15) with a Big Ten Conference match against the University of Maryland. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena.
