MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team cruised to its seventh straight win, earning a 4-0 shutout against in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 18) at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. It was Michigan's fifth shutout win in the last seven games.
The Wolverines jumped out to a three-goal halftime advantage with tallies early and late in the opening frame. Junior/sophomore Carly Bennett netted her first goal of the season -- the game-winner -- at the 8:13 mark, accepting a pass into the circle from senior Shannon Scavelli, cutting across to the middle before sending a shot back to the lower right corner of the cage.
Michigan added two more in quick succession late the first half. Graduate student Mackenzie Ellis set up the Wolverines' scoring change on a long free hit into the circle from midfield, finding junior/sophomore Allie Sardo in front. Sardo spun, got free from a CMU defender and goalkeeper and sending a slow roller to the right corner of the cage at the 26:54 mark.
The Wolverines scored again on a penalty corner less than four minutes later, at 30:15, when senior Lauren Thomas swept the direct shot to the lower right corner of the cage. It was Thomas' second goal of the weekend and career-best seventh of the season.
Michigan converted on another corner midway through the second half, at 54:58, to wrap scoring. Sophomore Katie Trombetta took the insert from Ellis and rocketed it to the board. Like Thomas, it was Trombetta's seventh marker of the season. Ellis boasted a career-best three assists in the game.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 11-1, and outcornered them, 8-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson made a pair of saves in the second half and combined with senior/junior Chris Lueb for the Wolverines' seventh shutout win this season. CMU goalkeeper Sadie Lyn Reynolds stopped five of nine U-M shots on goal.
