ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After weeks of fall practice, the University of Michigan baseball team returned to action Monday night (Oct. 19) to defeat the visiting Spring Arbor University Cougars by an 8-1 score at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Cougars were the first team on the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the first inning off a double and an RBI single.
Spring Arbor's lead was cut short, however, when Michigan rallied for three runs in the bottom of the second inning to go ahead, 3-1. After two quick outs, a single from junior Michael Brdar and four straight walks allowed the Maize and Blue to take the defining lead of the game.
Michigan tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third, when a wild pitch and a sacrifice flyout from senior Matt Ramsay allowed both juniors Carmen Benedetti and Drew Lugbauer to score. Two additional runs came in the fourth as well, thanks to RBI connections from Benedetti and Lugbauer that extended the Wolverines' lead to 7-1.
Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings, but an RBI triple from freshman Jonathan Engelmann in the seventh pushed Michigan ahead, 8-1 -- the Wolverines' final run.
Senior lefty Evan Hill was awarded the start for the Wolverines, tossing two complete innings, before junior lefty Brett Adcock took the mound. Hill allowed just one run on two Cougar hits, striking out two and walking one in nine batters faced. Adcock then faced eight batters in two innings of work, allowing no runs on no hits and striking out five.
Sophomore lefty Oliver Jaskie toed the rubber for the Wolverines for the fifth and sixth innings, striking out three and facing the minimum six batters. Junior Mac Lozer then made an appearance in the seventh, facing four batters and striking out one.
Benedetti closed out the eighth and ninth innings for Michigan, throwing two complete innings and allowing just one hit and walking two. He struck out two.
Michigan wrap up its fall series against Spring Arbor on Tuesday (Oct. 20). First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. from the Wilpon Complex, home of Fisher Stadium.
