ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Shannon Scavelli took advantage of a scrum in front to net the game-winning goal with less than 13 minutes remaining in the contest, propelling the No. 16-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 victory against Indiana on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4) in front of 363 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. With the victory, the Wolverines improved to 3-1 in Big Ten Conference play.
Michigan led at halftime, but the Hoosiers scored the equalizer on a penalty corner less than two minutes into the second half and the score remained deadlocked for much of the frame. The Wolverines regained the momentum and after just missing on several ensuing opportunities, finally broke through on a broken corner at the 57:19 mark. Junior/sophomore Carly Bennett carried the ball to the front of the net before it was batted around and kicked out to Scavelli, who knocked it into the lower left corner. It was Scavelli's team-best sixth goal of the season and her first game-winner.
The Wolverines struck first in the contest, at 24:52, when graduate student Mackenzie Ellis converted on a penalty stroke, finding the lower left corner past IU goalkeeper Noelle Rother. It was Ellis' second goal this season and U-M's first stroke goal.
Michigan outshot the Hoosiers, 12-6, and outcornered them, 8-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson and IU's Rother both made four saves in the cage.
