PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- For the first time in the 2015 season, the University of Michigan women's soccer team was forced to play beyond 90 minutes, as the Wolverines played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at No. 25 Rutgers on Sunday (Oct. 4) at Yurcak Field.
With the tie, Michigan is now in a four-way tie for second place in the Big Ten with 10 points and a 3-1-1 record. The Maize and Blue is also 0-1-1 in matchups against ranked opponents this season.
After a scoreless first half of play, Michigan got on the board first in the second half off a corner kick situation. The corner kick toward the back post by senior Christina Murillo bounced around inside the box and freshman Abby Kastroll's touch sent the ball just wide of the goal toward the left touch line. Sophomore Taylor Timko made a hustle play to keep the ball in bounds and sent it back into the six-yard box, where senior Corinne Harris punched it in for her second goal of the season. The Wolverine goal came at 57:34 and gave U-M a 1-0 lead.
That Michigan lead stood for just over 13 minutes until an own-goal by the Wolverines evened the playing field, 1-1, at 71:04. A long flip throw by Rutgers' Brianna Reed from the right sideline landed in the six yard box and U-M defender Madisson Lewis and goalkeeper Megan Hinz's attempt to clear the ball inadvertently sent it into the back of the net for a Scarlet Knight goal.
In the 84th minute, junior/sophomore Ani Sarkisian sent a hard shot from the top of the penalty box toward the upper left corner, but Rutgers goalkeeper Casey Murphy leaped and made the save. Neither team could manage the go-ahead goal and the match went to overtime.
Hinz made three saves in overtime, including two in the first 10 minute overtime period, to stop the Scarlet Knights from netting the sudden-victory goal. After 20 additional minutes of soccer the game came to an end in a 1-1 draw.
Hinz finished with seven saves on the day to help the Wolverines finish their trip to the East Coast 1-0-1, including a 1-0 win at Maryland on Thursday (Oct. 1). Prior to today's match, Michigan had gone 12 games this season without going to overtime. The last time the Wolverines went to extra minutes was in the 2014 Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, where Minnesota emerged with a 1-0 victory in the 109th minute.
Michigan was edged by Rutgers 11-10 in shots -- just the second time the Maize and Blue was outshot this season -- while both teams registered three corner kicks, including two in the second overtime period for the Scarlet Knights.
The Wolverines will now return home to host Northwestern on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match can be seen live online via BTN Plus.
