ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 15-5 run over the first 2:21 of the third quarter to distance itself from Binghamton in a 90-62 win on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 14) at Crisler Center.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty and freshman Nicole Munger paced the Wolverine attack, each scoring 19 points. Joining them in double figures were junior Siera Thompson (14 points) and freshman Boogie Brozoski (10 points). Michigan shot 49.3 percent (35-for-71) from the field for the game, including a 42.3-percent clip (11-for-26) from three-point range.
Munger and Thompson hit back-to-back three-pointers out of the half for a 44-27 lead just 34 seconds into the third quarter, turning an 11-point lead into a 17-point advantage. The run continued with another Thompson triple and layups from sophomore Jillian Dunston and Flaherty. Binghamton called timeout with 7:39 remaining as Michigan took a 53-32 lead.
The Wolverines kept their foot on the gas the remainder of the third quarter, taking their largest lead of the game to that point (23 points) on a Flaherty layup with 15 seconds left.
Michigan's lead swelled to as many as 30 points in the final frame as all 12 Wolverines saw the court.
The Maize and Blue closed the second quarter on a 6-0 run on baskets from Thompson, Munger and Flaherty to hit the break with a 38-27 lead. Flaherty led the way offensively with 13 points, while Thompson chipped in eight. U-M held a 28-15 advantage on the glass, spearheaded by Dunston's seven, freshman Hallie Thome's six and senior Kelsey Mitchell's five.
Michigan continues action tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 15) at Detroit. Tip is set for 2 p.m.
