ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In partnership with Athletes Connected, University of Michigan student-athletes Emily Browning and Maddy Frost produced a video for mental health awareness.
Browning and Frost are both juniors and are majoring in screen arts and cultures within the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. Browning is a goalkeeper for the water polo team and Frost competes in freestyle events for the women's swimming & diving team.
Other U-M student-athletes participating in the video were Jehu Chesson (football), Amara Darboh (football), Stacey Ervin (men's gymnastics), Shane Morris (football), Halli Travers (rowing) and Elizabeth Williams (water polo).
Many college students experience mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety, but student-athletes in particular are often reluctant to seek help for a variety of reasons. To address this issue, the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Depression Center and Athletic Department have collaborated to create "Athletes Connected," an outreach and education program for student-athletes to increase awareness around mental health issues, reduce the stigma of asking for help, and promote positive coping skills.
As part of the effort to raise mental health awareness, the 2016 Mock Rock show has named Athletes Connected as its beneficiary. All money raised from the show will be donated to Athletes Connected in memory of Garrick Roemer, a Michigan track & field student-athlete who died in May 2014.
