ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan ice hockey freshman forward Kyle Connor was named Big Ten First Star of the Week today (Tuesday, Dec. 15).
Connor was phenomenal on the weekend for Michigan, recording five goals and six points (5G, A) overall in a split weekend series against Minnesota at Yost Ice Arena. On Friday night (Dec. 11), Connor registered his first career hat trick and had a career-best four points (3G, A) in an 8-3 rout of the Gophers. He became the first Michigan freshman to record a hat trick in a game since Michael Woodford had three goals against Michigan Tech on Dec. 29, 2001, in the Great Lakes Invitational.
On Saturday night (Dec. 12), Connor had both Michigan goals in a 3-2 loss to Minnesota. He finished the weekend +5 overall, and now leads the Big Ten in scoring with 22 points (11G, 11A). He is second among NCAA freshmen in overall points and first in points per game (1.47).
The Wolverines will return to action in a little more than two weeks at the 51st Great Lakes Invitational, Dec. 29-30, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Michigan will play its opening game of the tournament against Northern Michigan on Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 7 p.m.
