
Wolverines Falter Late at Eastern Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team was outscored 19-6 in the final quarter, dropping a 64-63 decision to Eastern Michigan on Wednesday (Dec. 23) at the Convocation Center.
Freshman Hallie Thome had a chance to tie the game from the free throw line with 5.5 seconds remaining, but she made the first and missed the second. EMU was able to run out the clock on its next possession to seal the one-point win. The Wolverines tied the game at 62 on a designed slip screen layup by sophomore Jillian Dunston with 39 ticks left. EMU scored on its ensuing possession to take a two-point lead and set up Thome's free throws.
Sophomore Katelynn Flaherty led the way offensively for Michigan with 19 points, with Thome adding 15 and Dunston putting in 12. U-M, which shot 50.0 percent from the floor in the first half, finished at 40.0 percent (24-for-60) after converting just 26.9 percent (7-for-26) in the second half.
Michigan led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter as senior Kelsey Mitchell scored with three seconds remaining on a reverse layup to cap a six-point frame for her.
Transitioning to the second quarter, Thome made her first free throw and junior Danielle Williams tracked down the rebound on the second, allowing Michigan to retain possession. Senior Madison Ristovski beat the shot clock with a three from the top of the key to push U-M's lead to 10, 27-17, and force an Eastern Michigan timeout with 7:11 left in the second. Dunston scored a layup and Flaherty knocked down a long triple to result in another EMU timeout with Michigan up 32-17.
U-M headed to the locker room with a 43-31 lead, led by Flaherty's 16 points and Thome's nine.
Freshman Nicole Munger beat the third-quarter clock with a pull-up in the lane to help Michigan regain a 57-45 lead heading into the final frame after the Eagles managed to get within nine during the frame.
EMU scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to force a Michigan timeout with U-M holding a 57-52 lead with 8:15 remaining. Following the timeout, EMU scored again but Flaherty scored her first points of the second half on a triple to push the Maize and Blue lead back to six at the 7:09 mark.
The Eagles took their first lead since the opening minutes with 53 seconds remaining, setting up the final sequence.
Michigan now turns its attention to Big Ten play, welcoming Purdue on Thursday (Dec. 31) to Crisler Center. Tip is set for 1 p.m. [ Tickets ]
