AMES, Iowa -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team began competition at the Iowa State Classic today (Friday, Feb. 13) in the Lied Recreation Center. A group of 28 Wolverines made the trip to Ames and will resume the meet tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 14) at 9:30 a.m. CST with running events.
In the 5,000m race, five Wolverines competed, with each of the top three finishers setting a new collegiate-best mark. Junior/sophomore Tony Smoragiewicz was the top-finishing Wolverine at 21st (14:13.02), followed by senior/junior August Pappas (14:17.48) in 26th and classmate Nick Posada (14:21.18) in 29th. Sophomore/freshman Austin Benoit made his 5K debut, crossing at 15:20.56.
Sophomore/freshman Aaron Baumgarten helped push the pace in the race, leading the chase pack at 1,400m. Baumgarten and Smoragiewicz separated from the pack in pursuit of the race leader, spreading the race more thinly towards the back of the chasing field. Baumgarten tied up in the closing 600m of the race, but helped Smoragiewicz, Pappas and Posada to establish personal-best marks in front of him.
Sophomore/freshman Khoury Crenshaw set a new personal-best mark with his 21.59-second finish in the 200m race. His time was good for fifth in the event and displaces his own previous mark of 21.60 as the seventh fastest in U-M indoor history.
In the sprints, senior/junior Codie Nolan (6.87) and junior/sophomore Chris Maye (6.88) advanced to tomorrow's final in the 60m dash.
The Maize and Blue will resume action tomorrow morning (Friday, Feb. 13) in the Lied Recreation Center at 9:30 a.m. CST with running events, kicked off by the 3,000m race. Field events will resume at 11 a.m. with the triple jump and shot put -- where four Wolverines will compete, and the 60m hurdles will begin the sprints two hours later.
