GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's lacrosse team was held scoreless in its 2015 season opener against No. 4 Florida, as the Gators earned a 21-0 victory Saturday (Feb. 14) at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
The Gators got on the board early, as Nicole Graziano found the back of the net just 22 seconds into the game. Florida did not let off the gas pedal, pushing its lead to 6-0 in the first five minutes before sophomore Emily Braun got off Michigan's first shot, which was saved by UF goalie Mary-Sean Wilcox.
With Florida leading 13-0, U-M sophomore goalkeeper Allison Silber made four straight saves to keep the Gators from scoring for nearly 10 minutes. Florida eventually continued its run, tacking on three more goals before the half and taking a 16-0 lead into the break. Michigan got off five shots in the first half but could not find the back of the net.
Florida netted its first goal of the second half at 26:59 and held a 19-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining in the game. The Wolverines were able to slow UF's attack, allowing just two goals in the final 20 minutes of play.
Despite six second-half shots, including four on free-position attempts, the Wolverines were unable to get on the board.
Silber started the game and played the majority of time in goal for the Maize and Blue, making eight saves, while freshman goalie Kat Geffken saw six minutes during the first half in her Michigan debut.
Michigan will remain on the road for its next game, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop on Sunday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m.
