Michigan was shut out for the first time this season and just the second time ever in Big Ten play in a 2-0 loss to Minnesota tonight. The last time Michigan was shut out was on Feb. 8. 2014 -- a 4-0 loss at Penn State. Michigan was last shut out by Minnesota on Jan. 6, 1979, a 3-0 loss at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines finish the regular-season series against Minnesota with a 2-2 record.
Michigan has lost five games in a row at Mariucci Arena after tonight's contest. Michigan last won at Minnesota on Nov. 28, 2008, a 6-3 victory in the College Hockey Showcase.
The Wolverines allowed 18 shots on goal the second period, the most in one period this season. Junior goaltender Steve Racine turned away all 18 shots in the frame.
In his first start in net since Jan. 23 at Wisconsin, Racine was sharp, making 31 saves to keep the Wolverines in the game. For Racine, it was the fourth start of the season in which he has allowed just on goal against.
Michigan held Minnesota's No. 1-ranked power play scoreless on two chances, marking the fourth time in the last five games that the Wolverines have not allowed a power-play goal. Michigan's penalty kill is now 70-for-87 (80.5%) on the season.
Dylan Larkin's 10-game point streak came to an end tonight, as did Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves' five-game point streak. Before Larkin, the last time a Michigan player had a point streak of 10 games or more was Alex Guptill, who had points in 10 straight games from Feb. 9-March 23, 2013.
Four different players led the Wolverines with three shots on goal (Michael Downing, JT Compher, Tyler Motte and Dylan Larkin). Downing led Michigan with three blocked shots on the night, as the Wolverines had a total of 17 blocked shots for the game.
